What is the SCAT?

SCAT, or the School and College Ability Test as it is known in its extended form, is a standardized test conducted by the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

It identifies the skills of students between grades 2 and 12 and helps those who are academically gifted realise their dreams.

This ‘above grade level’ test measures the verbal reasoning abilities and mathematical skills of students in a multiple-choice format.

Sections of the SCAT Test

The SCAT test has two sections, verbal and quantitative. Each section contains 55 questions, including five unidentified experimental items that do not count toward the student’s score.

Verbal Section

The verbal section also has questions that are multiple-choice analogies. Students are required to choose the best pair of words to complete an analogy. Thus, it measures a student’s understanding of the meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability.

Quantitative Section

The quantitative section has questions that are multiple-choice mathematical comparisons. A student is required to compare two mathematical quantities and determine which is greater. Problems are intended to measure mathematical reasoning ability and thus often do not require computation.

Each of the two sections is 22 minutes long, separated by a 10-minute break. The break is optional and student-directed.

The SCAT test has three different versions:

Elementary SCAT – Students in grades 2-3 take the Elementary SCAT designed for 4-5 graders.

Intermediate SCAT – Students in grades 4-5 take the Intermediate SCAT designed for 6-8 graders.

Advanced SCAT – Students in grades 6 & above take the Advanced SCAT designed for 9-12 graders.

SCAT Test Scores

Your child’s raw score is converted to the scale score based on the test version and then compared to the results of the test scores of normal students in the higher-level grade. Hence, a good SCAT score varies with student’s grade at test. The score range and SCAT qualifying scores are:

SCAT Level Grade at Test SCAT Quantitative SCAT Verbal
Score Range Qualifying Score Score Range Qualifying Score
Elementary 2 412-475 433 401-471 428

SCAT Test – FAQs

1. What is the John Hopkins test?

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced pre-college students around the world. Receiving a qualifying score at an accepted test can earn your child an invitation to one of CTY’s recognition ceremonies or the opportunity to enroll in their engaging summer and online programs. The tests vary by grade level.

2. What are different SCAT Levels?

The SCAT is an above-grade level test, in which scores of CTY Talent Search students are compared to scores of regular students two grades above.

The JH-CTY uses three levels of the SCAT:

  • Students in grades 2-3 take the Elementary SCAT designed for students in grades 4-5.
  • Students in grades 4-5 take the Intermediate SCAT designed for students in grades 6-8.
  • Students in grades 6 and above take the Advanced SCAT designed for students in grades 9-12.

3.What are the items on the SCAT test?

The SCAT has only multiple choice questions. There are 2 sections:

  1. Quantitative Section– has questions in the 2-column format and students need to select the quantity that’s larger. With Math statements given in both the columns students need to understand if the quantity in one column is equal to, greater than or lesser than the quantity in the other column.
  2. Verbal Section– The question pair of words is related in some way. Of the other word-pairs given as answer options, students need to select the most appropriate pair that is related in the same way as the question pair.

4. How is SCAT Scored?

The SCAT (School and College Ability Test) is a standardized test designed to assess the intellectual abilities of gifted and talented students. The scoring of the SCAT test involves several steps like raw score, standard score and percentile rank.

Learn in detail here: How SCAT is scored.

5. What is a good SCAT score?

Your child’s raw score is converted to the scale score based on the test version and then compared to the results of the test scores of normal students in the higher-level grade. Hence, a good SCAT score varies with student’s grade at test.

6. How many questions are on the SCAT?

Each of the 2 SCAT sections has 55 questions. Of these, 5 unknown questions are experimental and 50 are scored. The two sections, each 22 minutes long, are separated by a 10-minute break.

What Our Customers have to say

Dear Tutor Abirami, Thank you for helping Rachel on SCAT test. We just got the test result tonight and she passed the test. Her verbal is 73% and quantitative is 80%. All of us appreciate your teaching and support. We will definitely recommend you to our friends if any of them are interested in SCAT. Thanks.

Rachel’s Mum

We were very happy with the intermediate SCAT review. We only had 2 days to review, and so we only did the quantitative portion. It helped my daughter go from 35% to 72% in 2 days on the practice exam. Suprisingly, she also got 72% on the actual SCAT to end up at 94 percentile. I don’t think she could have done this without etutor.

Vivienne Tang

I just wanted to let you know that my son passed the SCAT. He got 474 in verbal and 491 in math. Thanks for all your help.

Sue

Our daughter has entered the high fliers in her class in reading and has the opportunity to test with JHU CTY for gifted children. eTutorWorld has been a wonderful experience for us and we would like for her to continue with your tutor and set up the next three months of sessions as per your best advice.

Mehreen

Our experience with eTutorWorld has been a great one. The support, care, and professionalism of the tutors are worth every penny. A special thank you note to Ms. Shanti for teaching and helping our son to prepare for SCAT (score 469 Advanced CTY Level) and PSAT. He loves attending the English sessions, and he is happy that Ms. Shanti creates a positive and personal work environment. We highly recommend Ms. Shanti for English tutoring.
