The SAT Format

SAT test has 3 main sections and an optional essay section.

The 3 sections are:

1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)

  • The questions focus on research skills, comprehension, and interpretation of deeper contexts that ensure students’ readiness to survive in college.
  • It lays more emphasis on vocabulary that is not isolated but contextual. The questions also judge students’ word choice with an emphasis on underlying tones and meanings in it.

2. Essay (Optional)

  • Time: 50 minutes
  • The prompts analyze a student’s reading and writing skills as the write-up has to be produced after analyzing the source information provided in the question.

3. Math

  • Total of 58 multiple–choice questions of which 12-13 are student-produced response questions in the form of grid-ins.
  • 80 minutes for both the Calculator section and No Calculator section
  • Questions are based on high school math – Algebra I and II, Data Analysis, geometry, and some trigonometry
  • Several questions on the test may be based on a single scenario.
  • Questions will assess a student’s math concepts, ability to apply these concepts to the real world & proficiency in using math tools like the calculator.

The math section of SAT is divided into two parts, Math with a calculator and math without a calculator. And the essay section is optional, which means you may skip it if you don’t want to write an essay. 

Duration of SAT

The time of the test varies according to your choice.

If you choose to attempt the essay section, your test time will be 3 hours and 50 minutes.

Without an essay, this time goes down to just 3 hours. 

SAT Test Scores – Overview

The total SAT score is a sum of the individual section scores.

The total SAT score ranges from 400-1600. Section-wise, the scores range between 200-800.

This score is obtained by converting the raw score which is the number of questions answered correctly. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

SAT Percentile Score

SAT score is also presented in the percentile format to give a broader perspective to both the students and the colleges.

A percentile score highlights the performance in relation to the peers.

It is used to compare individual scores to other SAT takers and a representative group of 11th and 12th-grade students.

The total scale of the score ranges from 400-1600 (without essay) and is calculated on the score reported in different sections.

How many subjects are compulsory in the SAT exam?

If you are taking the SAT General , the subjects you need to be good at are English reading, writing, grammar, Algebra 2 and Geometry. Subject SATs of course require that you prepare well for the subject you taking the SAT 2 in.

What is the minimum number of subjects I can choose?

There is no minimum or maximum number of subjects to choose for the SAT. A student can choose to take either the general SAT or any of the subject SATs or both.

How is the SAT scored?

Your answer sheet is scanned by the college board system. The system considers the circles that you filled in and calculates your raw score. Because there’s no penalty for incorrect answers, your raw score is the number of questions you’d answered correctly. Your raw score is converted to a scaled score of 200 to 800 points which you see on your score report. College board uses a process to adjust for slight differences in difficulty between various versions of the test taken on different days.
