Learn Number division from Certified Online Pre-Algebra Tutor
When we divide a whole number by a power of 10, move the decimal point to the left the same number of places as the number of zeroes. If there is no digit add zero. The answer will have as many decimal digits as there are zeroes.
Let’s understand with the following example:
18 ÷ 100
To divide by a power of ten, move the decimal point to the left one place for each zero.
Count the zeroes in 100. There are 2 zeroes in 100. Start with 18. Move the decimal point 2 places to the left.
18. → 0.18
Write the answer:
18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
- 6 ÷ 100
- 9 ÷ 10
- 365 ÷ 1000
- 5,743 ÷ 100
- 4 ÷ 1000
