The SCAT Verbal Section has questions that are multiple-choice analogies. Students are required to choose the best pair of words to complete an analogy.

Solving an analogy can often be tricky and especially if the clock is ticking fast, like during the SCAT. eTutorWorld offers the SCAT Verbal Worksheets to prepare for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) SCAT Exam.

To Perfectly Solve a SCAT Analogy, You

  1. Need to be good with your English vocabulary
  2. Have the knack to identify relationships between words

Once you are proficient with the above, acing the Advanced SCAT Verbal can be a cakewalk!

However, being good with analogies can be nearly impossible without adequate practice.

SCAT is an online test, hence it’s best to practice using online SCAT Verbal Worksheets and Practice Tests – be it the Elementary SCAT, Intermediate SCAT, or Advanced SCAT.

Steps while Practicing for the SCAT Verbal Test:

  1. Identify the relationship between the first pair of words
  2. Form a sentence that captures the relationship between the two words.
  3. Try to spot the same relationship in the given answer options
  4. Make sure that the order of words is the same.

Example:   Carpenter: Wood

Options:

  1. Cloth: Tailor
  2. Mason: Mortar
  3. Astronaut: Space
  4. Doctor: Surgery

To complete the analogy, you may be tempted to select Cloth: Tailor. However, considering the order of words in the question word pair, option (a) will be incorrect.

The sentence formed from the question pair will be ‘A Carpenter works with Wood’.

Hence, the correct answer will be ‘Mason: Mortar’, as ‘A Mason works with Mortar‘.

Tips for SCAT Verbal

  • Pay attention to the order of the words in the pair.
  • Pay attention to the parts of speech. The relationships you need to explain will be constant relationships
  • Do not choose an answer with a reversed relationship. Do not select an answer based merely on the meanings of the words.
  • If you don’t know the meaning of a word, try to recall if you’ve ever heard it in an expression. It may help you to get the exact meaning of the word.
  • If you do not know the meaning of a word, then it is best to start eliminating the incorrect answers.
  • There is no penalty for wrong answers so attempt all questions.
  • Guesstimate when in doubt.
  • Do not spend too much time on a single question. If you do not know it, move on to the next.
  • SCAT has no penalties for wrong answers, so leave no questions unanswered.
